The University of La Verne’s Single Subject 4+1 program provides undergraduate students in specific fields of study the option to obtain their Single Subject Teaching Credential (7th -12th grades) and Master of Arts in Teaching with only one additional year after their undergraduate program for a total of 5 years.

La Verne’s 4+1 program is a direct education pathway for students to obtain their bachelor’s degree in English, Physics, Music, or Social Sciences as well as their Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) which includes the Single Subject Teaching Credential in a total of 5 years. The curriculum offers a unique approach to becoming an educator in your area of study by building a strong foundation in educational philosophies with an emphasis on the practical application of teaching methods within middle and high school classrooms.
Students in this pathway will complete their undergraduate coursework and will have 16 units of upper-division semester hours that will apply to both their undergraduate and graduate coursework. The credential coursework (upper division hours) will follow the same format and sequence as the traditional Credential & Master program for all credential candidates.
Program Requirements for Concentration
- Minimum 2.75 GPA to begin
- Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the program in accordance with the University’s Graduate GPA requirements
- Face-to-face interview with the MAT program chair or designee
- Meet with Education Advisor at least one time per semester to monitor progress according to requirements
- Must meet credential prerequisites prior to registering for the first credential class
