Orton Gillingham is a structured, explicit, multisensory, and cumulative approach delivered in a systematic way. Practitioners learn to assess each child for known and unknown patterns of letters and sounds and learn to select and deliver concepts based on a scope and sequence that moves from the simple to more complex. Lessons are formatted to provide time for new learning and review of previously taught concepts to build and strengthen neural pathways that have not been formed through traditional approaches. In each lesson, practitioners learn to assess and diagnose children’s knowledge and skills and use that information for planning the subsequent lesson.
